Jenny is trying to get pregnant, her husband Pete is trying to get drunk and his best mate Adam is trying to break the record for one-night stands. David is climbing the career ladder but his wife Karen is climbing the walls, desperate for a nanny. Rachel has just been ditched by her boyfriend but soon finds hope of another love when she collides with Adam at the supermarket.
Jenny, heavily pregnant, is driven to distraction by Pete's over-enthusiasm towards childbirth. Adam's plan to make Rachel spend more time at his place backfires when she beats him at his own game. He finally asks her to move in - the fall out when she doesn't want to live at his place. David thinks it's time he & Karen had another baby - if only to help squash Josh's potential behavioural problems. Jenny gives birth, with Adam acting as her birthing partner, when Pete is late getting to the birth. The name the baby after Adam, who overwhelmed by it all suggests he & Rachel move into a new place together.
Adam & Rachel find a house to move in together, whilst unpacking Adam discovers that Rachel has been married before (briefly) & has never been divorced. Adam walks out & goes to stay with Pete & Jenny, who are finding parenthood exhausting & is putting a strain on their relationship. David loses a large amount of money after a misjudged invesTrademarkent; when the Marsdens receive a tax rebate Karen decides she'll oversee the invesTrademarkent of it. Rachel contacts Kris about a divorce, but can't quite bring herself to ask him. He subsequently ends up coming to stay with her, much to Adam's horror. Eventually, she sees the hurt it's causing Adam & ask Kris for a divorce. She also gives him £500 to leave; unbeknownst to her Adam has done the same. Karen's invesTrademarkent pays off when her building society becomes a bank - she secretly loans the money to Adam & Rachel to buy a couch.
David is having sexual problems and asks Adam for help. Adam tries to spice up his own and Rachel's sex life. Jenny is till not ready to have sex after having the baby. David sees a prostitute who tells him how to sort out his problems. Adam and Rachel have sex in a shop window, and are arrested after a car crashes into the window.
Karen's back working at a publishing house - she's asked to edit Booker Prize winning author, Alex Welch's new novel - whom she finds flattering & charming. Ramona tries to warn David, he misunderstands and thinks Ramona fancies him. Pete's parents come to see their grandson; Pete's Dad antagonises him like he's always done. Jenny finds herself being driven mad by Pete's Mum. Pete and his Dad fall out when Pete refuses to give baby Adam a family middle name. Adam tells David Karen's having an affair; he retaliates by attempting a liaison with Ramona. Adam, having been inspired by Alex, writes a novel based on Pete and his Dad's relationship - Pete's extremely angered by this. Karen rubbishes Adam's book in retaliation for telling David about her almost affair. At Adam's christening, Pete gets a call in the middle to say his Dad dies en route.
Karen and a reluctant David go to marriage guidance counselling. Pete gets cable for Jenny as a surprise - she thinks it's time they got out more as the only conversation they have nowadays is about the baby. Rachel thinks Adam's turning into an old man before his time. He decides a big night out with the boys at a rave club will prove her wrong. Pete thinks it'll give him & Jen something to talk about. The girls go to a party - Jenny gets drunk, but remembers her husband & baby in time. Rachel's bored by all the men who try to chat her up, deciding Adam is quite fun. Neil comes on too strong on Karen & his halted from molested when Karen's knight in shining armour (David) rescues her in the same vein of how they met. The boys get caught up in a drugs bust and are arrested, but eventually released when Emma comes forward as a witness.
