Ellie and Levi, a couple with Down syndrome, are expecting a child, but social services threaten to take the baby away unless they can prove they are capable parents. Abby and her half-brother, Daniel, agree to represent them and try to design a workable parenting plan, though obstacles, including Harry, litter their path.
"Family Law" centers around Abigail Bianchi, a high-paid personal injury lawyer who's good at blaming others -- particularly when it comes to her own problems. After Abby's husband kicks her out of the family home because of her drinking, she goes on a bender, shows up drunk in court. The law society's punishment is swift. She's suspended, fined, and can only practice law again if she finds a senior lawyer who is willing to take her on and mentor her for a one year probationary period. Only one man is willing to take that risk: Harry Svensson, who runs the top family law practice in the city. He also happens to be Abby's estranged father, who left Abby and her complicated mother for his secretary when Abby was seven. Thus begins the odd dynamic at Abigail's new workplace. Abby has to try to put her shambles of a life back on track, all while working under the thumb of the man she's spent a lifetime resenting.
The lawyers are shocked and confused when a young couple begs them to reverse an adoption after learning about the baby's serious health issues. Abigail determines that the father, Ajay, is driving the decision and convinces the mother, Jane, to fight to keep the baby. Meanwhile, Daniel breaks it off with Danielle and asks Harry to promote him to partner.
Abigail gets in over her head when she agrees to defend her friend Elaine, who turns out to be an anti-vaxxer. Elaine's ex-husband refuses to allow their daughter to fly to Germany without being vaccinated. As Abigail searches for a way to challenge what to her mind is a perfectly reasonable request, she wonders if her loyalty to a friend is putting Elaine's daughter at risk.
