Siren of the Tropics
You won’t hear the sirens’ song in this film starring Josephine Baker because it is silent, but it remains enticing nonetheless. Set on the fictional island of Monte Puebla, a foreigner arrives from far away and a local girl quickly falls in love with the temporary resident. André Berval (Pierre Batcheff) has been sent to the tropics to prospect, while leaving his true love, Denise (Regina Thomas), at home. He has been promised her hand in marriage if he completes this arduous assignment, but that is actually a ruse, as another plans to court Denise in André’s absence. In the meantime, André preforms his work in the presence of Papitou (Josephine Baker), the aforementioned local who is smitten with the sexy surveyor. When André completes his mission, he sets sail for home and Papitou follows, but what will become of this naïve young woman when she realizes he is returning to be with Denise?
