D.I. Rabbit's been chasing Victorian London's criminals for as long as he can remember but he's not as young as he was and his heart keeps stopping, so he's forced to investigate the murder of a cabaret girl with two new young partners.
In the Victorian epoch, the struggle against criminals is performed by police detective Rabbit, who has seen a lot, because of which he often drinks, his assistant, a real bookworm, and also the police chief's adopted daughter, a dissolute but quick-witted girl. She turns out to be the first woman in the country to serve on the police force.
Rabbit is excluded from his team's undercover investigation of youth gangs and sent to investigate a series of deaths at and old people's home, leading to him questioning if he is getting too old for police work.
As a mystery sniper kills in London, Rabbit must protect a visiting Prince of Bulgaria, deal with the Prince's sister and an old flame who might be the murderer.
When a seemingly mad poisoner takes a group of young women hostage and threatens to release deadly gas if the police storms in, Rabbit must resolve the crisis before the female con he loves is executed for her crimes.
Things are not looking good for Rabbit as it's clear he's been framed for murder - or committed a murder. Either way, he's on the run, but Strauss and Mabel refuse to believe he's guilty.
