The Art of Preserving Art

The environment and the slow passage of time make objects and artistic materials vulnerable to all kinds of attack. But man is the only one capable of stopping the deterioration process that, without his intervention, would be fatally irreversible. An interest in the conservation of art has developed over the last century, relying on science and technology.

Man's irresistible need to express himself leads to the use of materials that are within reach, in order to leave a fingerprint on time. These materials are those that Nature provides and so the conservator has to face the difficulty of working with pieces of a very diverse nature, and has to be prepared because in this world everything is restored, even the world itself.

The diversity of materials and objects that face the workshops restoring these great artworks - palaces, monasteries, cathedrals - requires a small army of specialists that must understand in detail technologies and manufacturing processes that were forgotten or became obsolete a long time ago.
