Inspired by a real medical director's experience at the oldest public hospital in America, this emotionally gripping medical drama follows the brilliant and charming Dr. Max Goodwin (Ryan Eggold), as he sets out to change a broken system and provide exceptional care to the people who need it most. While inspiring almost everyone around him, Dr. Goodwin will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital - the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers Island and the President of the United States.
Max (Ryan Eggold) navigates his diagnosis while Dr. Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) encourages him to make a plan. Meanwhile, Dr. Bloom (Janet Montgomery) encourages Reynolds (Jocko Sims) to take a chance and Dr. Kapoor (Anupam Kher) and Iggy (Tyler Labine) work together to help a child.
Reynolds (Jocko Sims) begins to build his department as Dr. Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) battles skepticism from a patient's parents. Meanwhile, Max (Ryan Eggold) helps Bloom (Janet Montgomery) find a solution for a pregnant patient in a tough spot, all the while continuing to avoid the reality of his diagnosis.
When Max (Ryan Eggold) volunteers New Amsterdam to take over for a short-staffed hospital nearby, things get chaotic quickly. Iggy (Tyler Labine) has a crisis of conscience after receiving the news that funding for a garden has been granted and an eager resident learns a secret about Dr. Bloom (Janet Montgomery).
A journalist visits New Amsterdam to shadow Max (Ryan Eggold) and learn about the hospital. Bloom (Janet Montgomery) and Reynolds (Jocko Sims) have a major disagreement after she makes a call against protocol and Kapoor (Anupam Kher) deals with issues from his past.
The pressure is on as Max (Ryan Eggold) takes on his first annual fundraising gala at the hospital and emotions are high as some of the doctor's families join them for the event. Iggy (Tyler Labine) struggles to break difficult news to his daughter and Bloom (Janet Montgomery) and Reynolds (Jocko Sims) continue to deal with the fallout of their argument. Meanwhile, Kapoor (Anupam Kher) and Dr. Sharpe (Freema Agyeman) work together to find out what is making a father and son duo so sick.
