Candice Bergen returns as the eponymous broadcast news legend in the revival of the groundbreaking comedy series Murphy Brown. Back in the game after a brief retirement and faced with a world of 24-hour cable, social media, “fake news” and a vastly different political climate, Murphy is determined to draw the line between good television and honest reporting, proving that the world needs Murphy Brown now more than ever. Thirty years since the critically acclaimed, multiple-award-winning show premiered, and 20 years since it concluded, this revival reunites Bergen with series creator Diane English and original series co-stars Faith Ford, Joe Regalbuto and Grant Shaud. Jake McDorman, Nik Dodani and Tyne Daly also star.
After decades of being banned, Murphy and the team devise an elaborate ruse to sneak her into a White House press briefing. Also, Phyllis hires an enthusiastic college “Dreamer,” Miguel (Adan Rocha), to help out at the bar.
After Murphy attends a sexual harassment seminar for the Murphy in the Morning staff, she is surprised to find herself reeling from the long-repressed memory of her own #MeToo moment.
Murphy and the team weigh the pros and cons of accepting the offer to have the first interview with a headline-grabbing former White House senior advisor (David Costabile) who wants to promote his divisive book and agenda on Murphy in the Morning. Also, Avery moderates a lively political discussion on his show with locals in Buffalo, N.Y. Original series cast member Charles Kimbrough returns as Jim Dial in his first of three episodes, and Merle Dandridge guest stars as the team’s arrogant network boss, Diana Macomber.
Fearful of being scooped while legal vets her weighty investigative story, Murphy is exasperated when she learns Frank is dating an anchor, Christy Shepherd (Katie Finneran), from the competing Wolf Network. Also, Murphy leads Avery on a wild goose chase when he attempts to figure out her story.
The Murphy in the Morning team gears up for their live all-day coverage of the mid-term elections, competing against Avery, who is reporting with John Haggerty (Peter Gallagher), the Wolf Network’s conservative superstar. Also, Pat is horrified when Miles forces him to wear a conservative suit after assigning him to analyze numbers and trends on-air throughout the day.
