There has been a rash of unusual animals deaths in a quiet country village. Inugami, an investigator from Tokyo specializing in the occult, is called in to deal with the case, and encounters an unusual boy whom the villagers have named "Dorotabo."
Kabane is taken to by Inugami to his Counseling Office in Tokyo, where he meets Shiki and Akira, two other Kemono children like himself. He ends up accompanying them on an urgent investigation to learn more about their jobs as "Kemonoists."
Shiki and Akira take Kabane to visit the police station to meet Inari, a kitsune Kemono with considerable police authority. There, they are greeted by a young girl named Kon. Inari displays an unusual amount of interest in Kabane's "lifestone."
Kabane and the others are hired by a man named Yoruno to assist him in his romantic pursuits. They end up being joined by Kon, who is out to get Kon's head. However, the object of Yoruno's affection is a woman with her own unusual situation.
A longtime acquaintance of Inugami, the vampire Mihai, has been staying at the office. Kabane and the others unexpectedly end up in an arm-wrestling competition with him, but are outclassed by the extraordinary vampiric power that he possesses.
Kabane, Shiki and Akira embark on a dangerous mission set up by Mihai, breaking into a company controlled by a trio of kanonba (mosquito Kemono) sisters to investigate it. When discovered, they must fight it out, but something comes over Shiki.
