Set in New Zealand during the country's "gold rush" in the 1860s. Johnny Rogan, an 18-year-old Canadian, is accompanied his older brother to the Land Down Under in hopes of striking it rich.
When Johnny is kicked to the curb after a fight in the tavern, he takes a job with a questionable character. Meanwhile, the battle between land owners and prospectors rages on.
A traveling troupe makes a lasting impression on Lily. Her dream of being an actress puts strain on her relationship with Johnny as she considers leaving with the group.
Gambling and theater become a hazardous problem for Johnny and his bride.
As they continue their journey, Johnny and Lily are welcomed home. Johnny is intrigued by a logger looking for a partner and the prohibition movement draws Lily's attention.
