Schmit joined Poco in 1969, where he contributed to the development of the country rock genre, showcasing his talent on several albums before departing in 1977. His transition to the Eagles came at a pivotal time, replacing Randy Meissner as the bassist in 1977, just as the band was solidifying its place in rock history. Schmit's smooth vocals and skilled bass playing were featured on the Eagles' albums "The Long Run" (1979) and the live album "Eagles Live" (1980). Apart from his contributions to group efforts, Schmit also pursued a solo career, releasing seven studio albums.
