Sujata Kumar
Born and raised in India, Kumar never dreamed of becoming an actress. After marrying her husband in the early 1980s, they lived and worked in India for several years before relocating to the small Arab state of Oman. Her daughter, Kritika though everything appeared to normal, Kumar realized her increasingly unhappy marriage was beyond saving. After filing for divorce in the mid-2000s and moving to Mumbai to stay with much-younger sister Suchitra, Kumar slowly pieced her life back together. With a few years of steady commercial modeling under her belt, in 2006 she branched out into film with a small role in "The Memsahib," a sprawling examination of culture-clashing marriage. She had just finished filming her role as an overeager mother in the romantic comedy "Kya Love Story Hai" and a small part in "The Cheetah Girls: One World" when doctors diagnosed her with breast cancer, putting her nascent career on hold. Several rounds of treatment and one inspirational book later, Kumar was well enough to take on memorable roles as a stern school principal in "Guzaarish" and a conniving minister in "Raanjhanaa."
