Shazad Latif

Shazad Latif was a British actor who broke out in the United States in 2017 when he joined the cast of the eagerly-anticipated science fiction series "Star Trek: Discovery" (CBS, 2017-). Born into a working class family in North London, Latif dreamt of becoming an actor as a young boy. Thus, when he came of age Latif enrolled in the acting program at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre. Studying at the theatre allowed Latif to hone his craft under the tutelage of veteran actors, and before long he was appearing on stage in productions of "King Lear," "Glengarry Glen Ross," and others. Then in 2009 Latif booked his first major TV role on the British espionage series "MI-5" (BBC, 2002-2011). Latif appeared on the final two seasons of the show, which ended its 10 season run in 2010. After that series ended Latif continued landing TV guest spots on shows like "Black Mirror" (Channel 4/Netflix, 2011-) and "My Mad Fat Diary" (E4, 2013-15), as well as a recurring part on the British comedy series "Toast of London" (Channel 4, 2012-13). In 2016 Latif joined the cast of the fantasy series "Penny Dreadful" (Showtime, 2014-16). He played the literary character Dr. Jekyll on the show's third and final season in 2016. After "Penny Dreadful" ended in 2016, Latif nabbed his breakout role in America when he joined the cast of the "Star Trek" reboot series "Discovery." Latif played Lieutenant Tyler on the series, which debuted on the CBS network in the fall of 2017.
