Rolf de Heer
Dutch filmmaker Rolf de Heer has won a long-list of awards for his work as writer, director, and producer. Though born in the Netherlands, de Heer moved to Australia at the tender age of eight, and has lived there ever since. As a young man, he studied film at the Australian Film Television and Radio School in Sydney before establishing his own production company, Vertigo Productions. He broke onto the scene in 1984 with "Tale of a Tiger," a family drama he wrote and directed. With his next feature, the sci-fi thriller "Encounter at Raven's Gate," he added producer to his list of credentials. As his career progressed, de Heer became a luminary in the art house scene and a regular at film festivals throughout the world. In 1991, he earned his first nomination from the Australian Film Institute for his jazz-infused drama, "Dingo," which famously starred jazz legend Miles Davis. De Heer has gone on to earn a number of distinguished awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the esteemed Cannes Film Festival for his Aborigine adventure "Ten Canoes." De Heer continues to make challenging cinema in his adopted homeland, picking up more and more accolades along the way.
