Tonio's Mother
The little town of Esperanza is excited by the coming marriage of Luis Armijo, a widower, to Manuela Garcia. Then Tonio, Luis' little son, sees Sr. Bertrille flying. Tonio is sure it is his mother returning from heaven and rushes to spread the news. Luis and Manuela at first tolerate Tonio's fantasy, but then his father loses patience. Tonio fights with his disbelieving friend Pablo, and Sr. Bertrille separates the children and is forced to back up Tonio's story. Sr. Bertrille tries to convince Tonio, but taking her habit for heavenly robes, he clings to his belief. Father Dominic is unhappy but doesn't want Tonio held up to ridicule. Manuela postpones the wedding and the wedding gifts are returned. Manuela plans to leave, but Sr. Bertrille persuades her to stay for Tonio's sake. Sr. Bertrille, accepting Tonio's fantasy, convinces him she came down to be sure he had someone to love him. When she flies away, Tonio turns to Manuela for comfort. Later, from aloft, Sister Bertrille sees Tonio, Manuela, and Luis together, and is delighted with the happy family.
