The second season begins with Elena discovering her uncle John's bloody body and learning Jeremy's fate, and Damon realizing that Katherine has returned. Meanwhile, Caroline is taken to the hospital following a car accident, and Tyler's mysterious uncle Mason arrives in town.

After assaulting a police officer and getting a DUI, Malik is assured by his people that he is not going to jail. He later learns that the Sabers' owner is filling him with a false sense of security in order to kick him off the team.

Malik, frustrated with rehab and convinced that he has no problems or addictions, leaves to attend a Sabers' party only to run into Jason and Derwin, who confront him about his reckless behavior and send him back to rehab to face his problems head on.
