Misty May-Treanor

In 1999, May-Treanor joined the U.S. Women's National Volleyball Team, but soon quit because the sport was no longer fun. She instead partnered with beach volleyball player Holly McPeak, who was looking to make a run in the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. After a few tournament wins on the FIVB tour, May-Treanor and McPeak qualified for the Olympics, but finished a disappointing fifth. May-Treanor then teamed up with 6-foot tall Kerri Walsh and started what proved to be the most successful women's beach volleyball duo in history. The pair started by winning the FIVB tournament in 2002, then signed with the AVP tour the following year and went 39-0 en route to eight tournament wins. Before their successful 2003 run, May-Treanor almost quit the sport due to a torn posterior cruciate ligament. But with her father's encouragement, she had surgery and bounced back to a full recovery. May-Treanor suffered similar injuries to her PCL, both in college and as a professional. In 2004, May-Treanor and Walsh won gold at the Summer Olympics in Athens, then embarked on an impressive string of AVP tour wins that placed them near the top of the rankings and earned them the honor of AVP Team of the Year four years running. Then in 2007, the duo started an unprecedented win streak that rose to 101 match wins and 18 tournament titles. They rode the wave into the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China, where May-Treanor and Walsh increased their win total to 108 matches while winning their second consecutive gold medal. After the games, May-Treanor remained undecided about returning to the sport, citing her desire to start a family with husband Matt Treanor, catcher for the Florida Marlins. Meanwhile, prior to her win streak and second gold medal win, May-Treanor made her small screen debut, playing a small fictional role in an episode of "Eve" (UPN-WB, 2003-06). Following a cameo as herself in an episode of "CSI: Miami" (CBS, 2002-12), May-Treanor was announced as a seventh season contestant on the ratings juggernaut "Dancing With the Stars" (ABC, 2005-).
