Migos

Formed in 2009, the Georgia rao trio Migos had breakout success in the 2010s. The three members were all related by blood: Quavo (Quavious Keyate Marshall), his cousin Offset (Kiari Kendrell Cephus) and Quavo's nephew Take off (Kirshnik Khari Ball). They attracted some underground notice with a pair of mixtapes, Juug Season and No Label, in 2011 and 2012. But the 2013 single "Versace" (from their third mixtape, Young Rich Niggas-- shortened in some venues to Y.R.N.) was their first breakthrough. The track showed two of Migos' trademarks, their off-the-wall imagery and streams of rhymes. Though it only charted at #99 on Billboard's Hot 100 it became a viral smash and was embraced by two bigger stars: Justin Bieber danced to it on his own viral video, while Drake remixed the song and spliced in a verse of his own. Migos followed up with "Hannah Montana," again filled with surprise rhymes and pop-culture references. Originally planned as another mixtape, Y.R.N. 2 (which now stood for Yung Rich Nation was released in summer 2015, and spawned a minor chart hit with "One Time." This however was overshadowed by an incident in April, when Migos were headlining a concert at Georgia Southern University. Booked to play a 45-minute set, they cut the set short after 30 minutes (different reports claim that they were stopped by police, and that they stopped their own set when police arrived). Their van was searched and members of the group and entourage were arrested for narcotics possession and possession of firearms on school property, Offset with an additional charge of firearm possession by a convicted felon. Offset served eight months' time at Bulloch County Jail and during his second month incarcerated, he got additional charges for battery and inciting a prison riot. He was released in December but arrested again the following March, this time for non-payment of a parking ticket. He was released after claiming he believed he'd paid the ticket. October brought a new single, "Bad and Boujee." It became a viral sensation, spawning hundreds of memes on its "rain drop, drop top" lyric, and crossed over to hit No, 1 on Billboard's Hot 100. The same month, Migos were among the music stars who guested on Donald Glover's rap-themed TV series "Atlanta" (FX 2016-). The full album Culture appeared in January 2017. The album debuted at No. 1 and was critically praised for its more serious tone and wider lyrical scope.
