Firemen respond to a fire in a tenement. A young boy is rescued, but they find his mother raped, beaten, and near death on the couch. The boy refuses to talk and his mother dies shortly thereafter. Detectives Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Stabler (Christopher Meloni) track down the landlord of the building. He says the woman's name is Dana McGuire, but the real Dana McGuire lives uptown. The victim had stolen her license and was using her name as an alias. Her real name is Jill Hoffman and her husband Dan (Rob Estes) is a successful real estate agent in upscale Rye. The boy is Tommy (Max Weinstein), his son. Jill was his stepmother and she and Tommy were on the run from Dan's abuse. Dan shows up at the hospital to retrieve his son, even though the detectives now fear for the boy's life. Dan's attorney Priscilla Chaney (Sandra Bernhard) then threatens to sue so Benson and Stabler travel to Rye to apologize to Hoffman. They suspect he killed Jill but are having a hard time proving it.

Melinda discovers the spirits of three boys and a dog who died in an orphanage fire in 1956 and must help them cross over before the inn they are inhabiting is destroyed.

Warrick, Catherine, and Nick try to determine the cause of a house fire that kills a teenage girl. The fire is in the same neighborhood as a similar arson fire. Grissom and Sara investigate a man found dead with letter tiles in his stomach.

Thirteen-year-old Daisy Thorpe (Ashley Rose Orr) goes missing in a small upstate New York town that remains shaken by the unsolved murder of the local cleric's 13-year-old daughter, Amber (Megan Lusk), seven years ago. The team tries to determine if the same person is responsible for both crimes. As Martin and Danny work from the office, Jack and Samantha are forced to contend with the town's territorial and ineffective local sheriff, whose lead suspect for both cases is Curtis Horne (John Krasinski), the lowlife boyfriend of the murdered girl. The team wonders if the missing Daisy may have gotten too close to the truth of Amber's murder when the agents discover that she recently hounded Reverend Isaac Bryce (Randy Oglesby - "Enterprise") to discuss his now-deceased daughter. Daisy was obsessed with and outraged by the fact that Amber's killer had never been found. Meanwhile, Vivian remains home for health reasons, and Martin and Samantha's relationship reaches a defining moment.
