Mary Grace Canfield

Mary Grace Canfield is a character actress whose on-screen persona tended toward the spinster type. Her career in film and television spanned the mid-1950s to the early '90s. After appearing in theatrical dramas on television in the late '50s, Canfield had a supporting part in the Disney drama "Pollyanna," with Haley Mills and Jane Wyman, in '60. During the following years, she was given a substantial part in four episodes of the single-season comedy "The Hathaways," where she co-starred with Peggy Cass and Jack Weston and their "kids"--three chimpanzees. In '66, she had another four-episode supporting role on the sitcom classic "Bewitched," playing Harriet Kravitz alongside Elizabeth Montgomery's Samantha Stephens. Canfield's career role, meanwhile, began the year before, in '65, on another revered comedy, "Green Acres," with Eddie Albert and Eva Gabor. Canfield's Ralph Monroe was half of a pair of incompetent carpenter brothers (yes, brothers--an apparent nod to her androgynous looks). She appeared on 25 episodes as Ralph over the full span of the six-season series. Through the '70s and '80s and into the '90s, Canfield made brief guest appearances on a range of shows, from "The Love Boat" to "Cagney & Lacey," while on the big screen, one of her more notable roles was in another Disney movie, '83's "Something Wicked This Way Comes," which was adapted by Ray Bradbury from his own novel.
