Marion Lorne

Marion Lorne

A wide-eyed character actress with a somewhat plummy voice, Lorne often played amiably befuddled or dotty types, memorably as the killer's ever fussing but completely clueless mother in Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train" (1951). After receiving Emmy nominations for her work on the NBC sitcoms "Mr. Peepers" and "Sally," and a stint on Garry Moore's popular variety show, the scene-stealing Lorne went on to create her most beloved and hilarious characterization, that of Aunt Clara on the 1960s TV witch-filled sitcom "Bewitched." Accidentally conjuring up one sitcom mess after another, Lorne would then perform the most side-splittingly funny double takes imaginable in response, and won an Emmy one season for her inspired efforts.
