Ross jeopardizes a hospital study when he administers an experimental drug to a patient without the hospital's consent. Lucy begins her surgical rotation under Benton. Doyle accuses Romano of sexual harassment and asks Corday for support. Romano offers to reinstate Corday's surgical fellowship. And Jeanie agrees to date Dr. Graham Baker, a plastic surgeon.

Benton takes a costly sign-language class. Romano suggests Benton enroll in a program whereby Benton would substitute for vacationing doctors at rural hospitals for high pay. As acting chief of emergency services, Romano delegates a plethora of responsibilities to Greene and Weaver. Lucy and Carter share a romantic tryst while on duty. Greene treats hospital worker Mobalage for impotency. Joi's son dies of a drug pain overdose and the police blame Ross. Anspaugh closes Hathaway's clinic because Ross got the medical equipment that administered the fatal dosage from the clinic. Jeanie and Ross are involved in a vehicular accident on an icy road. Emergency personnel feverishly work to save the lives of children involved in a school bus crash. Mobalage's wife suffers from multiple stab wounds. Carter and Lucy refrain from sexual relations with each other due to hospital policy. Ross resigns from the hospital and decides to move to either Portland or Seattle. He asks Hathaway, his fiancée, to join him, but she declines. No criminal charges are filed against Ross for the death of Joi's terminal son. Anspaugh agrees to keep the clinic open, as long as Evans manages it--not Hathaway. Jeanie finds out she has Hepatitis C. Part 2 of 2

A curious Greene discovers Lee's a fake and that Anspaugh never checked her credentials. A day care worker suggests to Benton that Reese requires a "special needs" environment because he's exhibiting problem behavior. A cop, Reggie Moore, who Jeanie treats for a minor injury, asks her on a date. Eventually, she accepts. Greene ponders becoming an astronaut after a friend recommends him for a mission. Carter is annoyed by Edson's behavior toward Lucy. Hathaway befriends Joi Abbott, an exhausted woman taking care of her ill son.
