In the wealthy, seaside community of Neptune, the rich and powerful make the rules. They own the town and the high school, and they desperately try to keep their dirty little secrets just that...secret. Unfortunately for them, there's Veronica Mars (series star KRISTEN BELL), a smart, fearless 17-year-old apprentice private investigator dedicated to solving the town's toughest mysteries. Veronica actually used to be one of the popular girls, walking the halls of Neptune High with the rest of the "beautiful people." But it all came crumbling down around her after her best friend, Lilly, was murdered, and her then sheriff father, Keith (series star ENRICO COLANTONI), was removed from office for naming Lilly's billionaire father, Jake Kane, as the lead suspect. After Jake was exonerated, the scandal cost Keith his job, his home and his wife, and Veronica was ostracized by her friends, including her boyfriend, Duncan (series star TEDDY DUNN), Lilly's brother.

When a human body is found inside the strung up Otter mascot uniform of a rival school, Brennan and Booth investigate whether the body inside the costume was dead beforehand, or killed during a Middlesex University bonfire event. The body is identified as Jimmy "Beaver" Bouvier, a fraternity brother at Middlesex University. When Brennan and Booth question his fraternity brothers to gain information as to how he ended up in the rival school’s mascot uniform, they learn that Beaver had a money-making operation on the side and was making a killing of his own. Meanwhile, Booth offers to help his brother Jared (guest star Brendan Fehr) find a new job after being dishonorably discharged from the Navy for illegal activity he engaged in to save Booth's life recently.

Veronica investigates possible fraud at school in the election of student council president after Duncan wins, defeating a more popular but less affluent student who promised to eliminate the wealthy students' on-campus perquisites. Meanwhile, Logan causes a public relations nightmare for his movie star parents Aaron and Lynn Echolls (recurring guest stars and real-life couple HARRY HAMLIN - "L.A. Law" and LISA RINNA - "Melrose Place") when footage of him organizing boxing matches between homeless men is posted on the Internet and leaked to the media. Later, Veronica and Keith learn that the man who admitted to murdering Lilly is set to be executed, but a second look at crime scene photographs puts his confession in question.

Brenda's team investigates the shooting death of a popular online "hook-up king" who was in the process of putting together a television pilot for a men's cable network. The case goes awry when a police impersonator enters the picture. Meanwhile, Pope does a rotation as a regular member of Brenda's squad to get a firsthand look at how the team works, but his experience isn't exactly what he expected it would be.

A series of fire drills leads Veronica to the discovery that Neptune High has been receiving bomb threats. She enlists Wallace and Mac's (recurring guest star TINA MAJORINO) help to investigate classmates who could pose a serious threat to the school, including new student Ben (JONATHAN TAYLOR THOMAS - "Home Improvement," "Smallville"). Meanwhile, Keith stuns Veronica with the news of whom he's been secretly dating. Later, Duncan confronts Veronica about her ongoing investigation into his sister's death. JOEY LAUREN ADAMS ("Chasing Amy") guest stars as Ms. Stafford, a new substitute journalism teacher.
