Throughout his entertainment career as an accomplished actor, Jester Hairston graced the silver screen many times. In his early acting career, Hairston appeared in such films as the John Wayne historical feature "The Alamo" (1960), the dramatic adaptation "To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) with Gregory Peck and the dramatic adaptation "In the Heat of the Night" (1967) with Sidney Poitier. He also appeared in the musical adaptation "Finian's Rainbow" (1968) with Fred Astaire. In the seventies and the eighties, Hairston devoted his time to various credits, such as "Lady Sings the Blues" with Diana Ross (1972), "Christmas Lilies of the Field" (NBC, 1979-1980) and "Amen" (NBC, 1986-1991). He also worked on "Personal Services" with Julie Walters (1987). Additionally, he appeared on the television special "The Hollywood Christmas Parade" (1989-1990). He also worked in television during these years, including a part on "Family Matters" (CBS, 1989-1998). Hairston last acted on "Love & War" (CBS, 1992-95). Hairston passed away in January 2000 at the age of 99.
