Jeb Bush

Son of one president and brother of another, John Ellis "Jeb" Bush was born, in Midland, Texas, to George H.W. and Barbara Bush. A graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., he met the woman who would become his wife, Columba Gallo, while in Mexico as part of the school's summer student exchange program. After earning a degree in Latin American affairs from the University of Texas at Austin, Bush began his career in finance, working for the international division of Texas Commerce Bank. In 1980 he moved to Florida, where he launched a career in real estate development, among other entrepreneurial efforts. He worked with a cell phone firm and was involved in a company that sold water pumps in Nigeria. He worked on his father's 1980 and 1988 presidential campaigns, and he served as chairman of the Dade County Republican Party - a county that played a major role in electing Bob Martinez to the governor's office in 1986. Martinez appointed Bush to the post of Secretary of Commerce, where he remained until resigning in 1988 to work on his father's presidential campaign - though he turned away from politics briefly in 1989 to become a minority owner in the Jacksonville Jaguars, a professional football franchise. Bush ran for governor of Florida himself in 1994, losing to the Democratic incumbent, Gov. Lawton Chiles. He launched a successful bid in 1998, and won re-election in 2002. He was governor of Florida when his brother, George W. Bush, fought a hotly contested race, which required a recount in Florida, to become the 43rd president of the United States. He did work for a variety of businesses after leaving the governorship in 2007, including Lehman Brothers. His name was frequently listed as a possible contender for the office beginning in 2012, and he declared himself a candidate for the office in 2016 as one of a plethora of GOP candidates, eventually losing the nomination to Donald Trump. One of his post-presidential-run efforts was to pursue a purchase of the Miami Marlins baseball team with former New York Yankees star player Derek Jeter.
