Gloria Calderon Kellett

Writer/producer Gloria Calderon Kellett was a primary force behind such popular television comedies as "How I Met Your Mother" (CBS, 2005-2014) and the updated "One Day at a Time" (Netflix/Pop, 2017-). She was raised in Beaverton, Oregon and later, San Diego, California, where she graduated from San Diego High School. From there, Kellett studied communication and theater arts at Loyola Marymount and then acting and writing at the University of London; she also wrote several plays while at both schools, including "Plane Strangers," which won a Kennedy Center/ACTF Award for Fir Play, and "When Words are Many," which was named among the finalists for the London Writers Award. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Kellett performed as a stand-up and improv comic and occasional actor, but began pursuing a career as a writer for television at the suggestion of writer/director Cameron Crowe ("Almost Famous," 2000), for whom she worked as a second assistant on the film "Vanilla Sky" (2001). She earned her first writing credit for an episode of the sitcom "Quintuplets" (Fox, 2004-2005) before joining the staff of "How I Met Your Mother" as a writer, executive story editor and co-producer. From there, she served as writer and supervising producer on CBS's "Rules of Engagement" (2007-2013) and Lifetime's Devious Maids" (ABC, 2013-2016) for producer Marc Cherry ("Desperate Housewives," ABC, 2004-2012). In 2017, she teamed with TV veteran Mike Royce ("Everybody Loves Raymond," 2005-2010) to develop an updated version of Norman Lear's "One Day at a Time" (CBS, 1975-1984). The new series, produced with Lear for Netflix, shifted the focus to a Cuban-American family led by former Army medic Justina Machado and her mother, played by Rita Moreno. A critical hit for Netflix upon its debut in 2017, "Time" earned Emmy and Peabody Award nominations and won several ALMA and Imagen laurels, but its modest ratings led to a surprise cancellation in 2019. Dedicated fan support and tireless work by Kellett and Royce led to the series' revival on Pop that same year.
