Long Walk Down a Short Dirt Road
A small town radio disk jockey kills two people in an effort to extort $10,000 from a popular country singer in "Long Walk Down a Short Dirt Road." Country singing star Sue Anne Grainger receives anonymous telephone threats, but dismisses them as idle pranks until the caller tells her he has murdered a man in the city park to prove the seriousness of his threats. Starsky and Hutch enter the case when the body of a derelict wino is discovered exactly as the killer described to Sue Anne. Sue Anne tries to deliver the extortion money in cooperation with the police. When Starsky and Hutch fail to catch the man he kills another innocent bystander in an effort to convinces Sue Anne that her stubbornness is getting people murdered. In an attempt to stop the senseless killing, she slips away from police to deliver the ransom. As the murderer requests, Starsky and Hutch have no clue to the killer's identity or where Sue Anne might have gone to meet him, until a random police survey points to a local disc jockey as a possible suspect. The small town announcer had early in her career played Sue Anne's records and was now harboring a bitter conviction that Sue Anne owed him something for her success.
