Barbara Sukowa
Striking, versatile stage actress whose relatively few screen appearances have yielded several memorable performances. Sukowa played the title character of Rainer Werner Fassbinder's "Lola" (1982), for which she was named Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival, and had leading roles in Margarethe von Trotta's "Marianne and Julianne" (1982) and "Rosa Luxemburg" (1985). She subsequently appeared in such other features as Volker Schlöndorff's "Voyager" (1991) as a woman abandoned by Sam Shepard, in David Cronenberg's "M. Butterfly" (1993) as the wife of a French diplomat (Jeremy Irons) who leaves her for a Chinese woman who is really a man (John Lone) and "Johnny Mnemonic" (1995).
