Andrea Checchi

Prolific and acclaimed Italian actor Andrea Checchi has worked with some of the finest Italian directors of the 20th century. He began acting in 1934 and was soon earning lead roles in films. In 1946, Checchi won his first Silver Ribbon, for "Two Anonymous Letters," followed by "Roma città libera," written by Ennio Flaiano and scored by Nino Rota. He played Ivan Karamazov in the award-winning adaptation of Dostoyevsky's "The Brothers Karamazov" in 1947 and starred in renowned French filmmaker Rene Clement's war drama, "The Walls of Malapaga," in 1949. Continuing to work with the best directors, Checchi starred in Michelangelo Antonioni's 1953 film "The Lady Without Camelias" about the Italian film industry. Chechhi won his second Silver Ribbon in 1958, for Nanni Loy and Neo-Realism director Gianni Puccini's "Honor Among Thieves." Making films until the 1970s, Checchi died in Rome in 1974.
