Viva Cuba Libre
Los Aldeanos' hard-hitting lyrics resonate with the discontented Cuban population, but they get no airtime on the country's radio or television channels and their fans face abuse bordering on persecution by the police. "In every song they express our reality and our truth", says Adis Nidia Cruz. Her two sons were sitting on their porch one evening with friends, listening to Los Aldeanos, singing, dancing and waving a Cuban flag. At 11pm, five police cars showed up at the house, beat and arrested them. "Our music is direct and harsh, because that's our reality. And that's the government too: direct and harsh." Viva Cuba Libre offers a rare underground insight into the realities of daily life in modern Cuba.
