The Wreck and Rescue of the Schooner J.H. Hartzell
The night was calm as Captain William Jones guided the J.H. Hartzell towards the harbor. Without warning a raging storm descended upon Lake Michigan. As the ferocity of the winter storm measurably increased, the ship soon ran aground on a sandbar beneath Elberta bluffs. The rescue effort that followed went down in history as one of the most challenging of the United States Life Saving Service.
