The Pumpkin Eater
During her fourth marriage to writer Jake Armitage (Peter Finch), Jo's (Anne Bancroft) happiness is shattered when she realizes that not only is he unfaithful, but that he has been with many women. For Jake, he's unable to understand her anger since, to him, the affairs are meaningless and quite normal. But his reaction so distresses Jo that, when she finds herself pregnant, she agrees to have an abortion and be sterilized. Though resolved to build a new life with Jake and the children from her earlier marriages, Jo learns he's having an affair with Beth (Janine Gray), the young wife of a friend. And the situation grows even more intolerable when Beth's husband (James Mason) reveals that Beth is carrying Jake's child. Following a fiercely bitter fight with Jake, Jo tries seeking solace with her former husband, Giles (Richard Johnson). But when that doesn't help and she finds herself alone, Jo must choose to either accept life as it is with Jake, or leave him forever.
