After moving back to the remote home where her father died, Callie and her mother, Rae have more than just bad memories to contend with when Callie discovers a strange device in his study - the Stereoscope. She starts to wonder if it could have had something to do with his brutal death, when it seems to do the impossible and allow her to see into a parallel world. A world where a terrifying creature called the Reek is killing everything in its path. Since Callie and her mother are at odds, Callie is alone in her investigation in to the magical stereoscope. Over time, Rae and Callie find themselves growing further apart, and the division between them means Callie doesn’t share her suspicion there might be five worlds just like their own. And unknown to Callie, her experimentation with the Scope leaves Rae at the mercy of the monster Callie is starting to investigate. Help comes from an unexpected place when Callie is visited by a boy, Drew, who seems to know all about the Stereoscope, and tells her something impossible: that her father is still alive, and Drew knows how to rescue him. After a massive fight with Rae, Callie decides to trust Drew and together they set out to cross the veil, traveling to another world to try and find her father - only to find and encounter the horrific creature known as the Reek. Narrowly escaping The Reek, Callie finds out the terrible truth about Drew and determines to go looking for her father Lewis by herself. Which means telling Rae the truth about everything she’s learned. Callie and Rae set off to find Lewis and bring him home. Their first stop sees them come face to face with themselves After escaping world two, Callie and Rae end up in the last place they want to be; World Five. The first place the Veil fell. But they soon find out they’re not alone here and are being pursued by the Reek. Having found Lewis, but lost the Stereoscope, the family have to come up with a plan to get home together, or be trapped in the fallen world. They succeed and get home just in time as the veil falls. Now reunited and back home, Callie, Rae and Lewis work together and successfully defeat the Reek by imprisoning it in the space between worlds.
