Spent

Only at the surface is Spent about money. Evelyn Schumacher (Connie Lamothe) and her son, Lonnie (Darren Barzegar), live it up for the first time in their lives while their miserly family patriarch Herbert J. Schumacher (Nick Nerangis) is confined to a hospital bed, dying of a massive brain tumor. With no one holding the purse strings, Evelyn and Lonnie are free to spend Herbert's money and indulge themselves in frivolity. As Herbert's imminent end approaches, Evelyn has begun an affair with Gregory Frieze (Tony Villa), the owner of Phlopsey's, a shop for Vintage Divas he inherited from his mother. Evelyn mistakes Gregory's greed for love, showering him with gifts like a carefree schoolgirl. Lonnie, meanwhile, quits his job at a local movie theater, and says goodbye to Sarah (Janna Skylar Livingston), a beautiful young girl who clearly harbors a not-so-secret crush, in order to pursue his love of amazing cars and the woman who sells them, the sultry Margot Peer (Madeline Mikitarian). Imagine Evelyn and Lonnie's disappointment when Dr. Rogers (Nataly Martin) informs them that Herbert is a 4th of July miracle - he's going to live! And though Herbert tries to convince everyone he's a changed man, it's clear by his actions that he's just as stingy as ever. Which, of course, means that Herbert must die. And what better way to go than by rat poison? Herbert and his miserly ways can't get in the way of Evelyn, Lonnie, and their paramours' rich, happy future. It's unfortunate, then, when the paramours meet, fall in mutual love of the fortune that awaits, and make plans of their own. Who needs Evelyn and Lonnie when you can go directly to the source of all that money, a sum no one is quite sure of but Herbert himself, a fortune that Evelyn and Lonnie may have already SPENT without realizing it?
