So Big

Left penniless after the death of her father, Selina Peake (Barbara Stanwyck) takes a job as a schoolteacher in a small farming town where she tutors her landlord’s son Roelf (Dick Winslow). Selina eventually marries farmer Pervus De Jong (Earle Fox) and they have a son Dirk (Dickie Moore), whom Selina nicknames “So Big.” When Pervus dies, Selina inherits the farm and works tirelessly to pay for So Big’s education. Years later, a grown Dirk (Hardie Albright) fails to capitalize on the sacrifices his mother made and is ashamed of her farm life. It isn’t until he meets and falls for artist Dallas O’Mara (Bette Davis) that he sees his life needs purpose and it’s not until he meets a grown Roelf (George Brent) that he fully appreciates his mother’s efforts.
