Saving Face
Extended version of the 2012 Academy® Award Winner - Best Documentary Short. After years of abuse, 39-year old Zakia asked her husband for a divorce. His response was that he would “make a spectacle out of her,” and he threw a can of undiluted battery acid on her – resulting in horrific scarring and the loss of her left eye. Every year there are over 100 acid attacks reported in Pakistan – a statistic all the more shocking when one considers the following…the numbers are on the rise. SAVING FACE follows Dr. Mohammad Jawad, a British Pakistani plastic surgeon as he leaves London for Pakistan to offer his services to Zakia and the many other victims of acid violence. And while being treated by Dr. Jawad, Zakia attempts to do what few women have done before her in Pakistani society – fight for justice against her attacker.
