Set in the beautiful Kolkata of the sixties, Parineeta follows the love-story of the talented but emotionally high-strung Shekhar and Lalita an orphan with a heart of gold. Shekhar’s ambitious and conniving father, Navin Rai is against their match as Lalita has no money and has been raised by a middle-class family. Matters come to a head when Lalita decides to take the young and enterprising businessman, Girish’s help to save the fortunes of her adoptive family. But this act of selflessness leads to a crack in her relationship with Shekhar. Based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s 1914 novella by the same name, Parineeta portrays Bengali culture and the ethos of a bygone era with great perfection.
