Ninah's Dowry

As Victor Viyuoh's debut feature begins, the lead character, Ninah, tells her dying father of the immense misery she has experienced while married to an abusive man. Rather than continue living with her spouse, Ninah tries to break free only to be hunted down, captured and abused further. In staging Ninah's situation, Viyuoh brings to light the way in which the customs and conventions of a society tacitly enable the abuse of women in interpersonal relationships. Set in Cameroon, this beautiful film tells an ugly story.
