Le nozze di Figaro
Le nozze di Figaro – The Marriage of Figaro – is the tle of the successful opera buffa by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The work marks a shi from the composer’s earlier operas and is considered a masterpiece of the First Viennese School. The libre o was wri en by Lorenzo Da Ponte and is based on the 1778 comedy “The Mad Day or The Marriage of Figaro” by Pierre Augus n Caron de Beaumarchais. The story is set on the wedding day of Figaro and Susanna in Count Almaviva’s palace. A central theme in the plot is “jus primae noc s” – the right of the first night – a right enjoyed by ruling men, and which the Count is threatening to enact. In order to trap the Count, Figaro thereupon devises a complex game of intrigue involving all the characters in the story, however it does not work out as planned. At the end of the story, it is actually the women who prove themselves superior.
