Hot Water on Long Island
In July of 2019 The Earth Law Center, an International Environmental Legal Group, wrote a report about three schools on Long Island where they had monitored testing of the air and water at and around those locations. The results showed the students and staff at those schools had been exposed in some cases to deadly, cancer causing toxins. The schools examined in the study are: Bethpage High School, in Bethpage, Northport Middle School, in Northport and Frank P. Long Intermediate School, in Bellport, all on Long Island. The cancer rates and mysterious illnesses reported at those schools were abnormally high. Also, in July of 2019, the world celebrated 50 years since a man first went to the moon. Bethpage, Long Island and Grumman were instrumental in accomplishing this monumental achievement. Unfortunately, in the process they left behind a legacy of toxins that penetrated the groundwater and aquifer below the property, that is the sole source of drinking water for Long Islanders. The Bethpage Water District has stepped up to the plate and is providing safe, clean and potable water to their community. However, before these contaminants were discovered in the drinking water, many people may have gotten ill as a result. The plume of contaminants is spreading, about a foot per day heading toward the Southern State Parkway. The NY State DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation) has developed a plan to stop the spread.
