Dope Is Death
In the early 1970s in the South Bronx, the heroin epidemic was ravaging communities relegated to poverty due to decades of systemic racial oppression. Dr. Mutulu Shakur, Tupac Shakur’s step-father, led the Black Panthers and The Young Lords in creating the first acupuncture detoxification program in the United States, with the intention of healing and empowering communities in the South Bronx. Despite the eventual defunding and prosecution of the Lincoln Detox and its leaders, the center and Mutulus' legacy of activism and healing lives on.
