Despite the Gods
At 19-years old, Jennifer Lynch, daughter of cult film auteur David Lynch, directed her first feature film, BOXING HELENA. Savaged by critics, the film all but ended Lynch’s filmmaking efforts. Fifteen years after her dubious debut, the recovering addict and hard-working single mother returns to the director's chair with an ambitious new project set in India. Accompanied by her 12-year-old daughter, Lynch goes off to make HISSS, a feminist sensual fantasy based on an Indian legend about a shape-shifting serpent. What could have been an innovative taboo-busting comeback for Lynch turns into an 8-month misadventure (reminiscent of her father’s ill-fated DUNE). Plagued by bad weather, crew strikes, and even police intervention, Lynch must also contend with raising her daughter amid the bedlam.
