As the snow steadily falls, a herd of bison pushes against the prevailing wind. The valley is white; the geography barely offers any visual relief. Life is hard in the winter and survival takes great effort and energy here. The winter of 1997 was one of the harshest in decades - a quarter of Yellowstone National Park's entire bison herd perished.
