Molière’s troupe is enjoying huge success. Jean-Baptiste Poquelin is already a legend and King Louis XIV’s favorite artist. But in the spring of 1664, the young sovereign, who is keen to consolidate his power in relation to the Catholic Church, bans the playwright from staging his new comedy, Tartuffe, which ridicules the supposedly pious.
