Bonnie Prince Charlie
A rousing adventure film with David Niven in one of his best roles as Charles Stuart, who fought to claim the British throne since the Stuarts had been kings of Scotland and England for several hundred years until the House of Hanover usurped them. The film opens with the young prince sailing from France and landing in Scotland in 1745. He has difficulty persuading the people that he is, indeed, the real Prince Charles, but patriots such as Flora MacDonald (Flora Leighton), the Marquis of Tullibardine (Finlay Currie) and others manage to convince the clan leaders that he is who he says he is. The clans rally to his side and although the first battles with the British prove to be victories, the powerful British army rallies and meets the Scots on the Culloden Moor near Inverness and destroys the clans. Prince Charles and his aides flee and the rest of the film becomes a long and often harrowing chase as British troops attempt to hunt down the Pretender.
