A Deeper Shade of Blue
Aloha! I'm Jack McCoy and over the last 45 years I have made 25 films on surfing. My latest, A Deeper Shade of Blue was five years in the making, and is an accumulation of my life's work. In this film I try to tell the story about what surfing really is and what it's become. Set to inspire surf fanatics and non-surfers alike with innovative videography capturing stunning underwater imagery, A Deeper Shade of Blue is driven by an exhilarating soundtrack that includes Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Paul McCartney and Youth, Kaukahi featuring Jack Johnson, Iggy Pop and many others. This is not a surf movie, it is a film about surfing's deepest roots - in the subconscious; in ancient lore; in the craft of surfboard building; in man's perpetual quest for a joyful relationship with the natural world. With a presentation of eleven interwoven chapters, today's leading surfers are linked to those who came before, for a deeper appreciation of what it means to be a surfer and the soulful underlying power of modern surf culture. Come with me on a journey from surfing's earliest days to the present. You have a front-row seat to the world's oceans in all their glory, with some of the biggest waves, fearless surfers and eye-opening stories from the entire history of surfing. Witness the evolution of the boards, the culture and styles of surfing as the film brings together surfers and surfboard builders across the history of surfing from it's beginnings in Hawaii to the wave pools and tow-assisted big wave riding of today. Featuring Jamie O'Brien, Chad and Trace Marshall, Manoa Drollet, Stephanie Gilmore, Jordy Smith, Tom Wegener, Derek Hynd, Marti Paradisis, and Terry Chung sharing their stories, waves and magical connection to a common culture that's rooted in the Hawaiian tradition of Aloha and is now a global phenomenon.
