The Favor

S2 E1: Formerly a struggling stand-up comedian, Wanda Hawkins (series star Wanda Sykes) suddenly finds herself in the spotlight she always craved when she is hired as an on-air correspondent at a television talk show, The Beltway Gang, on local Washington, D.C., station WHDC, thanks to her best friend and segment producer, Keith (series star Dale Godboldo). Wanda's unrestrained field interviews and commentaries make an impact at the conventional station, WHDC, and ratings increase as a result. One problem, however, is that her no-nonsense style infuriates the show's conservative lead moderator, Bradley Grimes (series star Phil Morris). At home, Wanda advises her straightforward neighbor and former sister-in-law, Jenny (series star Tammy Lauren), who is raising her two children, teenage Holly (series star Jurnee Smollett) and younger Barris (series star Robert Bailey Jr.), on her own. When Wanda bets Bradley a huge sum of money that she can get an interview with a famous baseball player, John Becky (Adam Lazarre-White), before he can, she must resort to asking a favor of her scheming slacker ex-husband, Vincent Wickham (recurring guest star Dave Chappelle - "Chappelle's Show," "Undercover Brother"), who knows many celebrities. In return, Vincent asks Wanda to help him overcome his faults so he doesn't lose his fiancé like he lost Wanda. Along with Jenny and Holly, Wanda makes a six-page list of the annoying things that made her divorce Vincent. Despite her best judgment, after Wanda presents the list to him, she finds herself reminiscing with Vincent when their favorite song comes on the radio. However, her criticism is so withering that Vincent leaves, dejected. Wanda worries that he will renege on his promise to deliver Becky to her before Bradley uses his contacts to persuade the sports star. The next day, Wanda is surprised and pleased when Vincent brings Becky to the studio. She wins the bet with Bradley--but her questioning becomes so aggressive that the ballplayer angrily flees the set. Later, she and Vincent bicker good-naturedly as they listen to "their" song again.
